A local cookie maker, an engineering firm and a recycling company are in the running for a small-business award bestowed by the Charleston Metro Chamber of Commerce.

Charleston Cookie Co., CRG Engineering and Fisher Recycling are the three finalists for the chamber's Small Business of the Year award, the group announced last week.

The award recognizes companies' contributions to Charleston's civic and business communities, as well as their innovative ideas and problem-solving skills. Only chamber members are eligible.

The winner will be announced during the chamber's annual meeting and gala on June 29. Some details on the finalists:

--Judith Moore founded the Charleston Cookie Co. in 2003, and the company has grown rapidly ever since. The company's customers include Dean & Deluca, a N.Y.-based gourmet retailer, and the business has been featured on the Food Channel television network and in Southern Living magazine.

--Launched in 2002, CRG is an engineering design and consulting firm providing civil, structural, mechanical and electrical engineering services. Its clients include architects, homeowners, developers, commercial property owners, construction companies and government.

--Fisher Recycling recycles aluminum, glass, plastic, tin, office paper, newspaper, magazines and cardboard. It also collects electronic equipment from area businesses. Chris Fisher started the company in 1992 by picking up cans, bottles, plastics and paper from several Charleston restaurants and offices. The client base has grown to more than 300 customers.
