If Mom has a sweet tooth, you can make her day with a local goody.
--Charleston Cookie Company recently came out with Charleston Whoopies, the Holy City's version of a Whoopie Pie.
A Whoopie Pie is a cake-cookie-sandwich hybrid: rich, thick frosting 'tweenst cookie or cakelike layers on the top and bottom.
For years, they were a regional specialty of Pennsylvania's Amish country and Maine. Now, like cupcakes, they've been discovered and made trendy by bakeshops in New York and beyond.
As for the name, Amish farmers are said to have shouted, "Whoopie!" when they found one in their lunch pails.
Charleston Cookie Company makes two Whoopie pies, a chocolate chip and an all-chocolate.
The cookies are 4 inches across, the filling is butter cream frosting and the whole thing weighs about 3/4 of a pound. A decorative bag of two is $17.95.
Order online at www.charlestoncookie.com or purchase from the bakery at 1750 Signal Point Road in the James Island Business Park. The bakery is open 8 a.m.-5 p.m. Monday-Friday. Call 762-4185.
